Mentoring

MENTORS REQUIRED

The mentor is crucial to the success of our projects. Setting up a business is demanding at the best of times but for someone newly released from prison, there can be unique challenges to face. We are looking for sympathetic people willing to provide support and encouragement as a mentor to our clients. You are not expected to be a business adviser but simply to volunteer enough time to develop a supportive relationship with the client. We normally find that once a business project is up and running, a meeting once every couple of months is enough to provide the required support. We also find that phone and email contact between meetings is a good way of keeping in touch. You will of course receive training and support from Start-Up on how to manage your relationship and to ensure that it is a rewarding experience for all concerned.

The business projects that Start-Up supports are wide and varied but typical examples include garden design, painting and decorating, general maintenance, web design and computer technology.

If you are interested to learn more about our mentoring scheme or would like to volunteer, please write to us with brief details about yourself, the town or geographical area you would like to work in, how much time per month you would be willing to volunteer and any particular business projects that would interest you.

WANT TO BE A MENTOR?

Our mentoring programme is fundamental to the success of our projects and key in ensuring that our businesses stay firmly on track.

Our mentors’ role is to encourage, motivate and support clients as they set up and manage their business. Mentors are there to:

  • Establish a good rapport with the client
  • Act as a sounding board
  • Discuss possible courses of action and agree follow up
  • Highlight potential problem areas
  • Offer encouragement and helping to build self esteem
  • Liaise between the client and Start-Up
  • Provide regular formal feedback to mentoring co-ordinator (format provided by Start-Up)
  • Develop an action plan for future meetings

We provide training for all our mentors and hold a number of training days throughout the year.
